Microsoft President Brad Smith said in a statement the company fully supports proposed legislation in Australia that would force Google and Facebook to compensate media for their journalism. Microsoft on Thursday lobbied for other countries to follow Australia's lead in calling for news outlets to be paid for stories published online, a move opposed by Facebook and Google. Microsoft last week offered to fill the void if rival Google follows through on a threat to turn off its search engine in Australia over the plan. Microsoft President Brad Smith said in a statement the company fully supports proposed legislation in Australia that would force Google and Facebook to compensate media for their journalism. "This has made for an unusual split within the tech sector, and we've heard from people asking whether Microsoft would support a simi

Google Search Core Update December [2020] - Analysis by Qamar Zaman SEO & Website Expert from Dallas, TX - GlobeNewswire

Image
Dallas, Jan. 29, 2021 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- Until now, the SEO community is still speculating about the broad core algorithm update rolled out by Google on the 3rd of December last year. The search giant called it the December 2020 Core Update. I wrote an article about it over two weeks ago and talked about AI and Google BERT. But what does Google do when they roll out a core update? Why Google Keeps Rolling Out Core Updates? Google rolls out core updates several times a year when they implement significant changes to their search algorithms and systems. They do this to ensure that what they returned to their users' search queries is relevant and authoritative content. According to the search giant, unlike other algorithm updates, they always confirm if they roll out broad core updates because these changes usually brought widely notable effects such as drop or rise in website traffic. Impact of the December 2020 Core Update Search Engine Land reported that this recent broad core upd

Terminus raises $90M to grow its B2B marketing platform, now valued at around $400M - TechCrunch

Sales and marketing are often considered a single category on a business plan, but ironically, when it comes to building apps and services to help with them, they usually become separate entities, and so too do the teams that address sales and marketing in organizations. Today, however, a startup called Terminus — which is building a platform that views sales and marketing in a more integrated way, through account-based marketing — is announcing funding and growth, a sign of how its approach is gaining more traction. The startup has closed a Series C of $90 million, at a valuation we understand from sources to be around $400 million. This is a huge jump on Terminus's valuation in its last round, which was $96 million post-money in 2018, according to PitchBook data. Part of the reason for the hike is likely because of the huge focus that digital marketing has had especially in the last year — a time when, because of the pandemic, a lot of more legacy and traditional channels hav

Greens offer solution to a post-Google Australia: A publicly owned search engine - ZDNet

Image
If Australia's News Media Bargaining Code becomes law in its current form, Google has said it will have no other choice but to pull its search engine from the country. Prime Minister Scott Morrison and his army of ministers have all touted the viability of Microsoft's Bing if Google follows through on its threat to exit, but the Australian Greens have asked for an investigation into a different solution. "Following threats from Google to withdraw services from Australia, the Greens have called on the Morrison Government to investigate the establishment of a publicly owned search engine," a statement from Senator Sarah Hanson-Young said. The media and communications spokesperson said Google's threat to shut down search services if they don't get the laws they want shows that the corporate giant has far too much power, not just over the market but across the community. "The government needs a plan for how Australians will continue to be able to acce

Why an all-Australian public search engine is a ridiculous idea - ZDNet

Image: eddygaleotti / Getty Images On Wednesday, someone over at the Greens Idea-Thinking Collective had a rush of blood to the head. Their solution to this whole tech company versus media company drama? A publicly owned and independent search engine. A statement from Greens spokesperson for media and communications Senator Sarah Hanson-Young called on the Morrison Government to investigate the establishment of a publicly-owned search engine. Let's save everyone a great deal of bother. Here's what building a non-profit Australian search engine would entail. At its core, a search engine is just a key-value database lookup. The key is your set of search terms. The values it returns are the URLs of web pages that contain those search terms. The sort order of those results is ... well ... OK, it's a very complicated ranking function. It takes into account some secret-sauce perceived relevance and quality ratings, and returns a different sort order for different search

An indictment was unsealed today in federal court in Brooklyn charging Larby Amirouche with conspiracy to commit bank and wire fraud, bank fraud, making false statements to banks and conspiracy to commit money laundering.  These charges are brought in connection with a series of internet marketing schemes that utilized internet e-commerce websites to defraud consumers and financial institutions.  Amirouche was arrested today and will make his initial appearance this afternoon in federal court in Chicago, Illinois. Seth D. DuCharme, Acting United States Attorney for the Eastern District of New York, and Jonathan D. Larsen, Special Agent-in-Charge, Internal Revenue Service-Criminal Investigation, New York Field Office (IRS-CI), announced the arrest and the charges.  "Amirouche was the alleged ringleader of an elaborate internet marketing scheme designed to fleece unwitting consumers and financial institutions," stated Acting United States Attorney DuCharme.  "This Offi

Adding SMS to an Ecommerce Marketing Mix - Practical Ecommerce

Image
Text messaging can help ecommerce marketers engage and retain customers, but it is not a replacement for email communication or mobile apps. In 2021, roughly 280 million Americans will own a smartphone out of a total population of 328.2 million, according to Statista. Smartphones are ubiquitous, in other words. Many smartphone owners are seemingly addicted to their devices, looking at them between 80 and 100 times a day, depending on which survey you read. Text messaging — specifically, short message service (SMS) communication — is among the most popular smartphone applications. An often-quoted Gartner report from 2016, for example, found that SMS had an open rate of about 98 percent. And several other surveys estimate that many smartphone users will read a text message within five minutes of receiving it. Most American adults use a smartphone and check it regularly. Possible Google Local Ranking Update February 24th & 25th? - Search Engine Roundtable

Image
Generally when it comes to a Google local ranking algorithm update, you need to wait a week or so to see the chatter from the local SEO community. I am not seeing a lot of that chatter yet but BrightLocal's tracking tool is lighting up over the past two days, showing signs of serious fluctuations in the local rankings in Google Search. Here is what the tool shows for the past two days compared to the previous days. Keep in mind, the tool has been very calm for the past several weeks: The tool also lets you break down which industries or verticals were most impacted and it seems like car dealerships, bars and pubs, accounting/financial firms and some others were impacted most by this update. Joy Hawkins did reply to the Local Search Forums thread saying "Yep, I'm seeing some pretty giant shifts on the handful of clients that I just checked." Like I said, there is very little chatter but I am curious, do you see ranking changes in your area for the local pac
