Etsy Tweaks Search: Time to Review Your Listings - EcommerceBytes

How you write descriptions for your listings on Etsy matters even more now thanks to a change it made to its search algorithm. Etsy's search engine now scours listing descriptions for keywords in determining how to rank listings in search results.

That means how well you optimize your description could impact the visibility of your listings on Etsy.

Etsy announced the change on Tuesday and provided tips for sellers on how to take advantage of it.
Google and other search engines had already used listing descriptions when crawling the website - and keywords in other places remain essential for Etsy's search engine: "The keywords you use across your listing titles, tags, categories, and attributes are still essential when it comes to matching you to the right buyers." (Etsy has an article on Seller Handbook about how Etsy search works.)

Etsy explained how the latest change could help sellers: "Now that Etsy Search is looking for keywords within your listing description, the algorithm has even more to scan - allowing us to get your items in front of even more buyers."

It provided the following tips on writing descriptions to take advantage of the change:

- Aim to incorporate relevant keywords in the first few sentences of your listing descriptions.

- Avoid copying your title verbatim or simply listing your top keywords. Instead, you want to craft a sentence or two that casually incorporates a few of your top keywords in a way that sounds human and written in your brand's voice.

- Continue to include important information that will help buyers best understand your product.

This may be a good time to read over Etsy's advice on search and see if you're fully optimizing your listings. Etsy updated its help articles to reflect the change, which floated them up to the top of the "New articles for you" section of the Seller Handbook homepage.

As the tips in today's post indicate, how you optimize your descriptions matters - you don't want to "keyword stuff," as Etsy search guru Nancy Badillo notes in her take on today's announcement on her YouTube channel.

Sellers discussed the announcement on the Etsy boards today, with some speculating Etsy may make another change to lessen the importance of tags in search. One poster said they had noticed changes to search over the past couple of weeks.

Let us know if you see any difference in how Etsy sorts search results and if the change impacts you.
